Spring on the Costa del Sol (March to May)

A beautiful time to explore Andalusia

Spring is one of our favourite times of year in southern Spain.

The countryside becomes greener, flowers begin to bloom, and temperatures are perfect for spending time outdoors. After the cooler winter months, life gradually moves outside again.

March can still bring occasional rain, but by April and May, the days are usually becoming warmer and sunnier.

It's a lovely season for visitors who want to experience more than just the beach.

Things to do in spring

  • Explore the beautiful white villages of Mijas, Ojén and Frigiliana.

  • Visit the historic city of Málaga.

  • Go hiking in the Andalusian countryside.

  • Discover the spectacular Caminito del Rey.

  • Enjoy long lunches on sunny restaurant terraces.

  • Explore local markets and traditional Spanish towns.

Spring is especially appealing if you enjoy walking, photography or discovering authentic Andalusian culture.

Our tip: May is a fantastic month to visit. The weather is often warm enough to enjoy relaxing outside, but usually without the extreme temperatures of July and August.

Summer on the Costa del Sol (June to August)

Sunshine, beaches and unforgettable summer evenings

If your perfect holiday involves sunshine, swimming and spending long days outdoors, summer is the obvious choice.

July and August are the hottest months of the year, with average daytime highs around 34°C along the Málaga coast. Temperatures can climb considerably higher during heatwaves, especially inland.

The Mediterranean Sea becomes pleasantly warm, beach clubs are lively, and coastal towns are full of holiday atmosphere.

Summer is also the busiest season, particularly during the European school holidays.

Things to do in summer

  • Spend the day at the beaches of Marbella, Málaga or Fuengirola.

  • Enjoy a refreshing swim in the Mediterranean.

  • Discover traditional beach restaurants known as chiringuitos.

  • Visit coastal promenades in the evening.

  • Experience local summer festivals and outdoor events.

  • Relax in a peaceful garden with a good book and a cold drink.

A little advice for summer visitors

During July and August, we recommend planning sightseeing and outdoor activities early in the morning or later in the afternoon.

The middle of the day is perfect for slowing down, finding some shade and enjoying the relaxed Spanish rhythm of life.

At Casa Pitaya, you can enjoy your own private outdoor space, away from the busy coastal resorts, while still being within easy reach of the beaches.

Our tip: June is an excellent alternative to July and August if you want summer sunshine with generally fewer visitors.

Autumn on the Costa del Sol (September to November)

Warm days, fewer crowds and a slower pace

Autumn is a wonderful season to visit southern Spain, and September and October are particularly appealing.

After the busy summer months, the coast gradually becomes quieter, while the weather often remains beautifully warm.

September still feels very much like summer, with average daytime highs around 28°C. The sea has also had the entire summer to warm up, making it a lovely time for swimming.

October brings slightly cooler temperatures, usually around 24°C during the day, making sightseeing and outdoor activities more comfortable.

By November, the weather becomes more changeable, with a greater chance of rain.

Things to do in autumn

  • Enjoy quieter beaches and coastal towns.

  • Explore Ronda and other beautiful Andalusian villages.

  • Visit Málaga's museums, shops and historic streets.

  • Discover local restaurants and traditional tapas.

  • Go walking in the countryside.

  • Take scenic drives through the mountains.

Autumn is especially suitable for couples, friends and travellers who prefer a more peaceful holiday outside the busiest summer period.

Our tip: September is one of the best months to combine beach days with sightseeing, while October is ideal if you prefer more comfortable temperatures for exploring.

Winter on the Costa del Sol (December to February)

Escape the cold and discover a different side of southern Spain

Winter on the Costa del Sol feels very different from winter in northern Europe.

While much of Europe experiences cold temperatures and short, grey days, southern Spain often enjoys sunshine and pleasantly mild afternoons.

Average daytime highs around Málaga generally range from 17°C to 18°C during the winter months.

That doesn't mean every day is warm and sunny. Winter is also part of the region's wetter season, and evenings can feel surprisingly chilly, particularly inland.

Still, when the sun comes out, sitting outside with a coffee in January is one of the little pleasures of living in Andalusia.

Things to do in winter

  • Explore Málaga without the summer heat.

  • Visit historic towns and traditional Spanish markets.

  • Enjoy countryside walks on sunny days.

  • Discover local restaurants and cosy tapas bars.

  • Visit Ronda and enjoy the dramatic mountain scenery.

  • Spend peaceful days relaxing away from the crowds.

Winter is a particularly good choice if you're looking for a relaxing break rather than a traditional beach holiday.

Our tip: Pack layers! Even when the afternoons feel pleasantly warm, mornings and evenings can be much cooler, especially around Alhaurín el Grande.

The Costa del Sol is one of Spain's most popular holiday destinations, and for good reason. With around 300 days of sunshine a year, beautiful Mediterranean beaches, picturesque villages and countless things to explore, it's a wonderful destination in almost every season.

But when is the best time to visit the Costa del Sol?

The answer depends on what kind of holiday you're looking for. Are you dreaming of long, sunny beach days? Would you rather explore traditional Andalusian villages without the summer crowds? Or perhaps you're hoping to escape the cold northern European winter?

As a Dutch family who moved to Alhaurín el Grande in 2022, we've experienced the different seasons of southern Spain firsthand. And one of the things we love most about living here is that every season has something special to offer.

Here's our guide to help you choose the perfect time for your Costa del Sol holiday.

When Is the Best Time to Visit the Costa del Sol?
